Avandia: A History of Controversy
Avandia was released by GlaxoSmithKline in 1999 and marketed as an exciting step forward in the field of diabetes-control – a drug which significantly reduced the risks associated with living with Type 2 diabetes. However, within ten years, controversy and a series of damaging studies took the drug from a staggering high to a stunning low.

Controversial Findings
In 2006, Avandia was bringing GlaxoSmithKline some $2.5 billion in sales revenue a year. However, in 2007 an independent panel of experts released a report suggesting there may be a serious risk of heart attack and stroke associated with the drug. While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowed the product to stay on the market, it required a warning to be placed on the box.
Senators Max Bacchus and Charles Grassley filed a report requesting that Avandia be removed from the market, and cited a report alleging that there were 500 heart attacks every month which were caused by the drug. By 2009, sales of the drug had fallen by 80% and GlaxoSmithKline was facing thousands of lawsuits related to Avandia.
