The FDA’s Response to Avandia

Avandia was once considered a “blockbusting” type 2 diabetes drug because it increased a person’s sensitivity to insulin, allowing them to respond to the insulin’s signals for glucose regulation. However, recent studies regarding Avandia have found that it increases a person’s risk of stroke, heart attack, and even death.

Due to the Avandia findings, the Food and Drug Administration has taken several steps to warn consumers of Avandia and curtail its use. However, many people suffered from this drug before the FDA issued its warnings. If you are a victim of Avandia, you should contact the Avandia lawyers of the firm today at the firm.

The Black Box Label

In 2006, a meta-analysis regarding Avandia showed that this diabetes drug increased the risks of heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and death by as much as 40%. In response to these findings, the FDA ordered Avandia to display a Black Box warning label beginning in 2007. This warning label is meant to inform the public about the risks of taking Avandia.

Restricting Access

After several FDA committee meetings and other major studies published in periodicals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Food and Drug Administration has tentatively set up plans to severely curtail access to Avandia. Patients must sign informed consent contracts to take this drug, and doctors are only able to prescribe Avandia to people who absolutely cannot take any other similar medications.
