The Avandia Recall: How Did People Not Know?
Earlier this year, Avandia came under intense scrutiny due to its potential link to serious side effects. We can assume that everyone who needs to know this already does. Or can we? Apparently, the news of this issue did not reach everyone who needed to see or hear it, and as a result, many people exposed themselves to completely unnecessary risks. Below we'll take a look at how this process played out and what the potential effects of this lack of saturation of the notices regarding Avandia could have on people around the world.
The Issue in a Nutshell
In June of 2007, an article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine that basically compiled the statistics from several studies. When all of these numbers were crunched, it became apparent to the publishers at the New England Journal of Medicine that those who used Avandia faced a substantially higher risk of developing heart problems than those who did not take this medication.
The media in general embarked on what many would call a feeding frenzy in response to this news, so much so that experts on both sides of the issue began to weigh in with their perspectives. It seems that several experts and entities were both for and against pulling Avandia from the shelves, and there was even a Congressional hearing in the summer of 2007 that was held to come to a recommendation to the FDA in regards to whether or not to institute a recall. The experts, it turned out, did not ask for a recall, and Avandia remains available via prescription.
Some Didn't Know
The problem appears to be that there has never been a full-blown recall of the product, and as a result the media's coverage of the drug eventually dissipated to a point that not much was being said, recorded or written in regards to the issue. The media has its own objectives, and those are generally formed in pursuit of generating a larger following to their outlet. Avandia was no longer, apparently, a newsworthy issue.
As a result, stories are now beginning to surface that many people did not know that there was a problem with Avandia, and some are now beginning to feel the effects of using it when perhaps another alternative would've been advisable. Speculating a bit, one can surmise that as long as Avandia remains on the market, people will continue to use it, and as a result, people will continue to suffer the side effects associated with it.
