EU questions makers of Avandia

Posted on September 9th, 2010 No Comments

The European Medicines Agency is questioning the makers of the diabetes medication Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, in order to make a final decision whether the medicine should stay on the market or not.

The final verdict on the issue will be made by the end of the month and pressure for the EMA to pull the drug has increased after the drug has been linked to increased risk of health complications such as heart disease.

Avandia used to be the second highest selling drug for the company until claims of health issues were associated with it and the sales plummeted causing many doctors to switch to its rival drug.

In the U.S. some feel that the drug should stay on the market with advanced warnings on the label and a decision is also expected to be made by the FDA shortly.

FDA investigates the maker of Avandia

Posted on September 1st, 2010 No Comments

Federal Drug regulators are investigating the makers of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, to determine whether or not they with held information on possible side effects of the drug that were known before multiple reports of increased risk of heart attacks have come out.

The investigation will look into documents that will show if officials at Avandia, the diabetes drug, knew that the drug would increase patients risk of heart problems by anywhere from 30 to 43 percent.

If these documents are true, officials would have known about the dangerous side effects nearly eight days before they told the FDA that they found no evidence to support the claim that Avandia may cause heat attacks. Avandia has been under scrutiny after a number of experts have estimated that the drug may be the cause for more than 100,000 heart attacks and deaths since it was approved.
